Carmichael Middle School glittered in gold on Sept. 30 in support of childhood cancer research. Students and staff were decked out in gold and yellow clothing and were given gold stickers and bracelets to raise awareness for the cause.
The school set a campaign goal to raise $1,000 for childhood cancer research in three days. Thanks to the support of students, parents, teachers and the PTO, a grand total of $1,486 was donated!
Raising money for childhood cancer has a special meaning to Carmichael students. In 2019, eighth-grader Roberta Maestas and seventh-grader Sam Veder were diagnosed with cancer. To show their support, students and staff at Carmichael wore gold to take part in a global “Go Gold” cancer awareness campaign.
Sadly, Roberta lost her battle to cancer in June 2021. Her wish was to continue to raise awareness of childhood cancer. Carmichael has taken on that challenge for Roberta and plans to hold yearly Go Gold campaigns.
